DEGAS' use of "Broken Color"

Another master of color in drawing, Edgar Degas used pastels on these images of dancers and women.
Look how he has LAYERED up the colors to make a shimmering quality.

Consider copying his mark making techniques... lines, cross hatch, dots, and other layering techniques...

Candy drawing sample

Here's one way to solve the drawing..... shapes of values! Triangles, diamonds, etc....

This is one made with craypas (oil pastels) on a rough, painted paper.

One example of a candy still life glued together.

Quick, small sketches to plan the composition.

Using Color in Drawing

Explore the idea of "Broken Color", by recreating a sample sheet of color experiments. Create a sample ( one color inside another) for each of these categories: Hot and cold color reactions, color complements together, a value change, a saturation change, and create three samples of color marks to create a "shimmer" effect..... OPTICAL mixing of colors...

Here is a sample sheet:

MONET created his trademark images using broken color techniques. Take a look:

Wayne Thiebaud

Thiebaud, and American painter (born 1920) uses thick paint and vivid colors to create images of man made objects. His work depicts ordinary objects, often in a series, with simple backgrounds-

Answer these questions about his work...

What do you notice about how and where he uses hot and cold colors?
How does he create and illusion of  depth in his work?

Thiebaud made these wonderful paintings of San Francisco.

He even applied his colorful skills to landscapes.

Photoshop Set up

Here is a "screen-shot" of photoshop with the brush set up for us to use....

Brian Selznick

Selznick, a trained illustrator, uses pictures to tell stories. Look how his  work also uses a series of images, almost like movie scenes, to build the story.....
Also, look at his use of modeled lines and a range of values to describe round forms...
